Tell us how your music journey started

My music journey started in Chitungwiza at the age of 5 where I started playing plastic bottles and buckets as drums in the street. While my peers where pushing wire cars or playing football “chikweshe”, I found joy and happiness in playing drums.

What makes your music stand out?

I think what makes my music stand out, first of all is that it comes from my heart. I am not trying to please anybody or trying to follow the trends, I only do what makes me happy. Secondly, I’m deeply rooted in my African culture and that comes across in my music. I always want to fuse the Zimbabwean sound which includes the traditional Mbira music, Jit and Sungura but adding a contemporary fill to it and other genres around the world. I also think the sound of my guitar is very unique to other players.

What challenges have you encountered in pursuing your music career?

My biggest challenge has been trying to convince my family about my career choice. It has never been easy for me since I come from an academic family. In the UK my biggest challenge is trying to put my music on the national radios, as well as finding performing platforms where I can represent our Zimbabwean sound on a global scale.

How have you overcome the challenges you have encountered in your music career?

I overcame the first challenge by breaking the stereotype that music is all about sex, drugs and partying. That musicians are non-achievers or as we call them “marombe”. I now earn a good living from music. Most of my live performances are being received very well by people across all races and cultures and I have also invested a lot in different businesses in the music industry and they are all very profitable. The second challenge is still an on going journey, although quite recently big radio stations in the UK like BBC Radio have started to notice my talent and are now playing my music. Hopefully as I release more music more doors will open.

Tell us about latest single Mari and what it entails

Mari is a song that talks about money in the context of love and romance. I just realised that in this day and age it’s starting to get harder and harder for a man to find love especially when his pockets are shallow. Girls are also looking for stability and that is why they are now opting for an older man or a “blesser”, as we call them now.

Where does your song writing inspiration come from?

Most of my song writing inspiration comes from my personal experiences, what I see, feel and read.

Who do you want to collaborate with in your next music project?

In Zimbabwe I would love collaborate with Tamy Moyo and I would love to collaborate with many artists across the continent of Africa. In the UK and internationally i would love to collaborate with Fuse ODG, Wyclef Jean and AKON.

Partying words

Stay true to yourself and believe in yourself because if you do others will as well.
